Background

Three decades of clinical work

I have worked as a mental health professional for nearly three decades, providing crisis services, psychotherapy, and psychological assessment to adults, adolescents, children, couples, and families.

My training has been primarily psychodynamic and psychoanalytic. Over the years, I have studied and worked extensively within object relations, psychoanalytic, and Jungian traditions. These ways of thinking continue to inform my work, particularly their attention to the parts of emotional life that may not be immediately available to conscious awareness, and to the ways our earliest relationships can continue to shape how we experience ourselves and others.

At the same time, many years of clinical practice have made me less interested in applying theory to people than in allowing theory to help me listen more carefully to the particular person in front of me. No theory can fully account for a human life.

I have also taught and consulted with other mental health professionals for many years. Teaching psychotherapy has continually asked me to reconsider what I think I know, and working with other clinicians has deepened my respect for the complexity of this work.

What I bring into the therapy room, then, comes from many sources: formal training, decades of clinical experience, teaching and consultation, sustained engagement with psychoanalytic and depth psychology, and my own experience of long-term depth psychotherapy.

I bring that background seriously, but lightly. I do not assume that expertise means already knowing who you are.
